On The Sewing Table : M6560

So, I still sew, I just haven't recently. So when better to decide to sew a very springy dress than we were in the middle of the biggest snow storm of the year? Obviously there's some serious wishful thinking happening on my part. Anywho, I'll be sewing McCalls' 6560, and here she is.

I'm trying to work through both my pattern and fabric stash. No new patterns until I sew at least a few I already have. I brought this one at least a year ago, so it's about time. I also had some fabric that had no plans to be made into anything, until now.

Pretty right? It's Valori Wells, Floral Birds in the Merlot color. This fabric feels great, it's a linen cotton blend, and something normally that would be way to expensive for me to even think about. I picked it up at a sale my local indie fabric store had awhile ago, so I scored big time.

I'm actually pretty excited to fit everything onto my new me size mannequin. Then again, I'm a pretty big sewing nerd.

The Perfect Pretend House

Wes Anderson always has the best interiors in cinema. They're beautiful, story book like, even if everything feels a bit "off". One of my favorites has always been the Tenenbaum house. My favorite room in all of 111 Archer Avenue has to be the pink 4th floor ballroom.

It's perfect. I can't help but love it. I've always been a huge fan of pink. I remember when my mother let me pick the paint color of my room for the first time. I picked the brightest most pepto bismol pink I could find.

"Are you sure?" She said barely trying to hide her disappointment.

It wasn't even a question, it was perfect.

When it came time to repaint our two front rooms, dining and living respectably, I don't think it was a coincidence that we happened to be re watching The Royal Tenenbaums. I leaned over to Brian and asked,

"What if I painted the rooms pink?"

He was quiet for a second, but said, "If you can make it the Tennebaum pink, we've got a a deal."

My mission was set, after numerous samples of my favorite paint, I think I've finally settled on the perfect color.

Meet Valspar's Hibiscus Pink. It reads a bit less blue in the house than it does on the screen. It looks so perfect next to the freshly painted white trim. I'm excited to see both rooms once they're done! I've got a few other projects to tackle first, but this is one of the more exciting ones. Even if I actually hate painting.

White Wood Floors

I know like many other people I've lusted after the very Swedish painted white wood floors. I had just the room to do it in too! The "guest bedroom" Which really is just a catch-all room where laundry and extra furniture ended up. While it has wood floors they weren't very nice. Gouged and stained from the previous owner. Check out the listing photo to see what I mean...

They actually look much better there than they do in real life.

I know some people feel very strongly about painting wood. I don't though, and since it's my house you really shouldn't care if I paint a very shitty wood floor.

I started off sanding what little finish remained on the floors.

Then I put two coats of primer down.

There was some staining that still came through the primer, I though about using kilz... but I got lazy.

Then I used valspars paint and primer for three more coats in a satin finish. High gloss is really hard to keep clean on a floor.

Then since the floor is so so white, the rest of the at least 20 year old paint looked awful and yellow. So We set to paint all the trim with the same valspar paint. Also decided on a few samples for a new wall color.
Behold! The world's worst iPhone panorama! It looks 100 times better even in this halfway complete state. I'm waiting on the floor to be completely dry before I start working on prepping the walls for paint though. It's been about three days and it's still kind of tacky. Cincinnati has been pretty humid, so I'm not going to pull my hair out if it takes more than a week to dry.

I'm considering putting a poly top coat on, but that might be more hassle than it's worth. I've heard that back in the old days, people would paint their woods floors once a year in the spring to keep up with maintenance. That seems really doable. Even if it's just to touch up scuffs.

We decided to go with Belle Grove Aloe Green by valspar for the walls.(It's the paint sample on the left wall in the picture above.)
It looks a bit more blue on our walls than in the sample. It's pretty soothing though, which is good, because this room is going to our new bedroom, surprise! The whole bedroom dreaming moodboard has actually been set into motion. While I love how much room we have in the loft, summer+not the greatest insulation+second floor bedroom=cranky Paige. It gets VERY hot.

One day we are ideally going to gut and redo the upstairs, adding more vents and insulation. Until that day though, I can't handle the heat. I also have this really unreasonable fear that one of the huge trees surrounding our house will fall and kill me while I sleep. I'm obviously really reasonable.

There's still a bit of one stain that peeks through. Our bed will be over it though, so I'm not too concerned. There's still so much work that needs to be done in this room, but I'll keep everyone updated!

Mood Board Mondays : Hazel Plans

Hazel Plans

Spoiler alert guys, I finished sewing simplicity 1800 last weekend (Scheduled to post on Thursday)! In time to wear to a BBQ even! While I bask in the fleeting glow of a completed project, let's start planning my next one! I'm going to be sewing the Victory Patterns Hazel. I have this great buffalo check in pink for the top, but and at a loss at what to do for the bottom half. I think I have it narrowed down to navy, gray, or sea glass.

Any input?

The Bathroom Plan

We have one weird wonky bathroom in our little house. While I'm in no way against a 1 bathroom home, I have a personal vendetta against ours. The previous owner, as my Realtor would say," bon von jovi'd " it. It's was redone in the 1980's, and redone poorly at that. It's got this horrible honey colored laminate. When they installed the toilet they put it on a painted marble slab. The sink is huge and wide, and you have to shimmy to get around it. There are weird bars and shelves everywhere. The tub stops short of the wall, so they built a pony wall, THAT CUTS OF THE WINDOW. Hadn't they ever heard of a curved shower curtain? I'm sure before it had a beautiful claw foot tub, which makes this a million times worse. Oh yeah, and they never even finished the walls out behind the pony wall. I just... I can't. Also, one of the last rooms that still rocks a shade of flesh tone paint, ew.

So Let's get our plan together shall we?

For those of you wondering about my time frame, like anything to do with my house, this is going to forever I'm sure. It's not easy when you have only a little expendable income at at time. Plus the idea of putting in a new sink seems so over my head. Maybe I can get my dad to help me when he comes up from Florida this fall? I can at very least paint though! I'm cheating a bit when it comes to the paint selection, it's a can I already own. Seeing as the Boyfriend has the entire weekend off, we might actually get something done!

In the meantime I will have sweet dreams on sledgehammering that pony wall.

Straight Skirt

I've picked the first piece for my wardrobe challenge! It's a super versatile straight skirt. You already saw my wearable muslin for this skirt. I'm going to make the darts a bit longer, and the skirt a bit shorter. I hope to get this done within the next few days.

Wardrobe Challenge

I'm currently in the planning stages of a mini wardrobe challenge. My new years resolution involves trying my  hardest not to purchase any ready to wear clothing in the year 2012. So I figured I'd do a wardrobe challenge much in the style that Colette Patterns hosts twice a year. I've been pinning inspiration like a mad man for a few weeks, and have narrowed it down to the images that really struck me, and clothing I've been obsessing over.
As far as colors go, I'm thinking lots of lemony yellows, pale corals, creams, and small accents in a light grey blue.

As Far as my neutrals, black will always be my favorite. I'm also feeling Large florals and oversize graphic prints. The third dress looks alot like the macaroon pattern, with a little ribbon trim. I also need to make a swim suit, which terrifies me. I love the retro high waist bottoms look. I have a feeling I might get stuck drafting that one myself though. That might end up being a huge disaster, but is totally worth a shot in my opinion.

The Final palette ended up looking like this.

I really dig it. Bad news is that I have like no stash fabric this matches. Not buying clothing for a year is a good an excuse as any to buy more fabric though right? Check back soon for the pattern selection once I get them picked out.

Meringue Skirt Plan

For those of you who don't know, I've been sewing my own clothing pretty regularly the past year. I recently picked up the "Colette Sewing Handbook". The Meringue skirt is the first pattern in the book. The book, much in Colette Patterns fashion, is really quite beautiful. Not to mention all five of the patterns are total classics.
I'm planning to do the meringue skirt in a very special navy corduroy. It's special only because it belong to my maternal grandmother, who passed away about a decade ago. So you better believe I'll be taking my time with it.
I've already made the muslin, which I definitely had to tweak some, so that removes a lot of the room for error. That and it's a fairly simple skirt. So I'm hoping I don't somehow with my knack for ruining sewing projects fudge this one up. I'll probably cut it out sometime today, work on some other top secret Christmas sewing projects, and then get unpacked from my trip to DC to see family for Thanksgiving. I'd like to have all my gift sewing done by my cookie exchange which is on the 17th. I'm pretty much the world's greatest procrastinator though. It wouldn't surprise me if I was slaving away over the sewing machine at 3 am Christmas eve.
But enough about my horrible time management. Point being I'm super excited about this skirt, and the chance to use this fabric. Also I'll be posting some pictures of my sewing room in the house section later today!

ladycave part two!

So The lady cave has some ridiculously bad retro wood panelling, some serious dust, and a mass of my stuff! There are also a lot of things left by the previous owner, wood, weird crappy furniture, yada yada. Anyway I get going with some photos.

view from the backside side of the house

View from the front side of the house.

The utility side of the basement, ie laundry, storage, and the likes.

The beginnings of a dark room space!

My sewing space, as soon as I get everything unpacked. Brian already monopolizing my comfy chair, I have another one to build, in case someone wants to come hangout and sew with me. I have a feeling it'll just be more of a bowie lurking on me chair, but whatever.
List of things to do for the lady cave, long term & short term.
•paint everything white, floors, walls, beams.
•Make light blocking curtains for the darkroom section.
•Build shelves all along wall in sewing area for storage.
•Buy Damprid to clear up some musty smells.
•Find a place for everything
Ikea trip this weekend to pick up some stuff for the guest bedroom! We're having our first official guest next week, My sister Tori-Jane! Then followed by my dad and his girlfriend, and then my mom and stepfather. It's going to be crazy, so I want to have the guest room up to par so it's one less thing to worry about.

Lady Cave

So I've decided to turn DOOMbasement into Lady Cave. As many of you know, I am the queen of hobbies. I recently purchased everything I need for my own darkroom. I'm also a sewer, so to save Brian from the tangeled mess of thread that is, also going in the lady cave. I've been ~trying~ to work out, so maybe one day I'll have a nice piece of exersize equiptment to get jiggy with. A Mini bar and place to sit wouldn't hurt either.Photos of my scary scary basment to come!

The Listing Photos

This is the house I'm in the process of purchasing. It's a 1923 cape cod, that was sadly renovated in the late 80's. So my plan as far as my own renovations, since little of the original 20's charm is in the house,is that I'm making it my own Mod Cape Cod.

Here's the front of the home. It's got a simple facade, but I can work with that. I don't like the vinyl siding aesthetically, but practically it makes sense. That's something I'll just have to save for if I want to replace. The front porch, which has oak planks lurking beneath that awful excuse of a carpet, is nice. I even really like the swing, but I think that's just the southern girl in me. It has the original front door with the corrugated glass. Someone painted it what I can only describe as the color of a tongue. It's pretty sad looking. But maybe if I can strip the paint off there might be something nice underneath. If not, I'd be more than content to paint the front door yellow.

Ladies and Gents, check out that red carpet of DOOM. Seriously, who thought this was a good idea? Also the previous owner had cats, carpet and cats never mix. The good part about this carpet is that it's not even stapled down. It's basically just set over a floor pad and tucked under the shoe molding. Underneath are the original oak hardwood floors. The first thing I'm doing after closing is ripping doomcarpet out and DIY refinishing the hardwood. Carpet, always a bad idea.

These are the two bedrooms, the large cave like one is the loft. it's a 10x34 second floor with a ceiling that could be a frame and beam heaven. If not for those pretty disgusting acoustic tiles. Plans for that are paint EVERYTHING white, floors included, and one day gut and throw an open bath in there. Instant master bedroom. Until I save up the mucho monies that will be needed, painting will suffice for now. The second bedroom is a box, with a closet. the floors will be refinished the same time as the others under the carpet. I don't know how to tackle the AC stuck in the wall though, the house has brand new central air, so it's obviously got to go. I'm just not sure how to go about it. I'm thinking about throwing a bed in there for guests, aka my parents, and making it my dressing room and or sewing room. I might do the latter in the basement though, we'll see.

The bathroom. Which is pretty wrong. When the previous owners did the remodel they cut the floor joist under the potty , which hasn't sagged yet, but it will. So that's the first thing to fix. Also instead of just keeping the clawfoot that was in there they built a tile wall fight in front of the window leaving like a foot of space inbetween. I plan on at least knocking it to a half wall until I get money to redo the whole bathroom. It's got some pretty hideous laminate wood flooring in a pine yellow. One day black penny tile will look amazing in there.

Ah the kitchen. I'll be at very least painting everything white after move in. The linoleum floors could be asbestos, so until that's confirmed they stay as they are. Then based on the results of said asbestos they might be torn up, or tiled over. The door leads out to a pretty bitchin' back deck. Althought the photos don't show it, the yard is huge by city standerds.

The back view of the house, the yard isn't dead. just dormant. They didn't photo any of the amazing trees in the yard. Lots of gardening and yard work, we'll see how that goes.
Wish me luck, Paige
