The Perfect Pretend House

Wes Anderson always has the best interiors in cinema. They're beautiful, story book like, even if everything feels a bit "off". One of my favorites has always been the Tenenbaum house. My favorite room in all of 111 Archer Avenue has to be the pink 4th floor ballroom.

It's perfect. I can't help but love it. I've always been a huge fan of pink. I remember when my mother let me pick the paint color of my room for the first time. I picked the brightest most pepto bismol pink I could find.

"Are you sure?" She said barely trying to hide her disappointment.

It wasn't even a question, it was perfect.

When it came time to repaint our two front rooms, dining and living respectably, I don't think it was a coincidence that we happened to be re watching The Royal Tenenbaums. I leaned over to Brian and asked,

"What if I painted the rooms pink?"

He was quiet for a second, but said, "If you can make it the Tennebaum pink, we've got a a deal."

My mission was set, after numerous samples of my favorite paint, I think I've finally settled on the perfect color.

Meet Valspar's Hibiscus Pink. It reads a bit less blue in the house than it does on the screen. It looks so perfect next to the freshly painted white trim. I'm excited to see both rooms once they're done! I've got a few other projects to tackle first, but this is one of the more exciting ones. Even if I actually hate painting.

New and Improved Karl!

Remember how I told you guys about how we spruced up karl a bit? Well I finally got around to taking some photos. I think he looks pretty good. For the last version of the living room check it out here.

Why yes, that is the third rug we've had in the past two years. This one is sticking around, it's so soft and wonderful. The table was a vintage find from an antique fair. The Ikea tray we already had just so happens to fit perfectly on top.

Look at how big Taco is getting (Depending on who you talk to, it's Taco or Spaghet. In real life, he answers to "kittens" more than anything. David never ended up sticking.)! I think the first time I posted about him was here.  He still has leg issues, but at this point it's looking like it will be a lifelong thing. There's a hunch that his cerebellum either isn't full developed, or it sustained some trauma early in life. He has a pretty awesome life, he scuttles around the house chasing Bowie, and eats EVERYTHING.

I also picked up this tray the day I bought the chaise. It's nice to have a place to set the remotes and my coffee in the morning. Plus it's a great color. I need more blue in this room. I think the curtains are going to be a bit too dark for winter though. Might be time to do a little seasonal switch out.

Winters are pretty depressing here in Cincinnati. We statistically have more overcast and rainy days than Seattle. A little color couldn't hurt in improving the mood round the house.

Ikea Hack A Tall Hyllis Unit

I have a problem about not using my vertical space. I live in a small home and should really be taking advantage of it. I'm in the middle of my mini living room makeover for fall. I got the sofa situation sorted out (read about that here), and now I'm working on the other parts of the room.

This is the view from our new comfy couch.

Look at that stout little shelf. It's at the same height as the TV. It gives us this huge dead space on that wall, and makes the room feel shorter. Raising the TV higher is a no go, my boyfriend is a major cinema-file and has last say on everything that is related to his viewing experience. So I turned to the shelf. It's the Ikea Hyllis   shelf. It's simple and cheap, coming in at just fifteen dollars. I use them a lot in my basement, and needed something to hold a few vinyls and my ever growing magazine collection. I just grabbed one I already owned from the basement and have been using it there for the past few months.

I wanted a taller shelf though, but new more new furniture isn't really in my budget at the moment. Time to get a little bit crafty. I thought I could probably double up the shelving and create a taller unit. Buying another hyllis would only set me back 15 bucks, and if it didn't work I could just use it in the basement for storage.

So I set to work.

I assembled the second shelf as the instructions said. The I removed on shelf from each unit.
One one the top, and on one the bottom. You won't need these shelves, so set them aside.
You will also need to remove the screws from the shelves where the support pieces need to overlap.

Stack them on top of one another and match the holes as best you can. I had a small issue with the hole not being perfectly round when I matched everything up. It wasn't a big deal, using a drill/screw gun to screw in the screws made it easy.

It only took a few minutes really, and I think makes a big difference.

In fact, a wall of these double tall hyllis might look very cool as a library.

Now I just need to figure out what to do above the tv, maybe some art?

Any Ideas?

PS Sorry for the crappy iphone photos, they were kind of an after thought.

The Saga Of Karl

I should probably have a PHD in browsing craigslist. I manage to find awesome stuff for little to no money. Take for example our little Karlstad sofa, originally from IKEA. When I saw the posting in the free section for him, I was pretty skeptical to say the least.

I mean he left a lot to be desired. The previous owners dogs had torn up the back cushions. The slipcover was sun-damaged, and it had smelled better days. The owners were basically looking for someone ambitious enough to use it for a project, and to avoid the furniture pick up fee by the garbage collectors.

Lucky for them, I am that person. So I set up a meeting and made sure to run through my usual craigslist checklist.

-Check like a madwoman for bedbugs. If you have any doubt, leave it.
There were no signs, and I even had them break the sofa down so I could check all the nooks and crannies.

-Could I buy it new for less than a hundred of their asking price? If so, will it kill me to wait and save up the extra money?
Since Karl was free, this question didn't apply.

-Will it fit in my house and design scheme?
The clean lines seemed versatile enough, and I didn't actually own a sofa at the time.

-Can it serve more than on purpose?
Since I had such a tiny apartment, it would also serve as a guest bed.

-Do I need to rent a truck to get it home?
Luckily, once it was all unscrewed, it fit very snugly into my Honda Civic. Mind you I was sitting two inches away from the steering wheel, but it fit!

I took Karl home.
Now I'm sure there might be those of you who are wondering why I would want a smelly sofa without back cushions. Here's the thing, I love a good project, and knew this would be easy to fix.

Making sofa cushions is one of the easiest things ever. Buy some foam and batting from Joann's (using your coupon of course). Cut the foam to the size you need, and wrap that bad boy in batting.

But what about covers you ask? Since Karl is from my favorite Swedish superstore, I knew I could get a cover for about fifty bucks, making the sofa look brand new.

As for the smell, it wasn't super bad. While the sofa was still disassembled I did a few things to help. I vacuumed every surface, dusted with baking soda, and vacuumed again. I opened every window in our small apartment and gave it lots of fresh air. I sprayed it with 50/50 vinegar and water mix, waited 24 hours, and then fabreezed it to hell and back. By the time I was done, it was two days later and it smelled like a couch instead of a frat house.

Here it is currently.

In fact I loved it so much I brought the ottoman (from Ikea) and loveseat (from Craigslist).

But I wanted a change in the room, and have been saving my pennies to buy this add on chaise to add to my original Karl. The way the room is set up now makes it feel very small, but I need the extra seating. I'm hoping having one long sofa along the back wall of the living room will open it up much more!

As luck would have it my stalking of the as-is section of Ikea has paid off. Last weekend there was an uncovered, missing a back pillow, chaise.

For 130 dollars, which is more than half off the regular price.

Count me in.
So for about 240 dollars, including new slipcovers, I own a 700 dollar sofa.

Just kidding you guys, but you know how I feel about the opportunity to use a good gif!

I'll be posting about the living room a bit later, since a lot of stuff has changed. Keep your eyes peeled for the big Karl reveal!

Have you ever scored big and paid a little?

Post Labor Day Hangover

I didn't get nearly as much done as I wanted to this week, in fact I only really got one thing done off of my to-do list.
I ~finally~ installed some transition strips in the living room. We installed the VCT floors last summer and I'm just now getting to it. IT was looking pretty gross, basically holding dirt, and it was starting to chip up a bit. Something really needed to be done.

Why no, I don't procrastinate. Why do you ask?

It was pretty simple but a bit time consuming. First I cleaned up and scraped the paint off that bit of floor seeing as the transition isn't really that wide. I tried using a paint scraper but it was gouging the wood a bit. I tried a few different things until I settled on the handle of a butter knife being the perfect tool.

Once the paint was scraped and the area cleaned I bought a few transition strips. These are actually a metal product, they cost around 8 bucks for a 36 inch length at Lowes. I cut them to fit (30 in) using a hand saw and box (which took forever, maybe it's time to invest in a power saw?) . I then just nailed them down. The floor looks weird in the pictures because I just swiffered, it dried without looking all crazy.

I'm going to start painting the trim nice and white here shortly, after the new bedroom is completed.

Speaking of the new bedroom, sad news on the white floor front. The poly I used ended up yellowing really really bad. So I'm in the process right now of sanding the poly off and putting at least one more coat of paint on the floor. I hope it ends up covering the yellow. You live and you learn right? Never ever ever used an oil based poly on white paint. It will always yellow.

Just for some reference, here's the floors when we moved in...

Thank god there's no such thing as smell'o'vision. That doom carpet might be the most cat pee saturated carpet of all time.

Updates!

The living room has changed quite a bit! When we first moved in the living room it looked like this.

Look at the doom carpet. Pretty Awful no? Luckily we had awesome floors underneath! Add a couch and some paint and it looked like this:

While I loved the slipcover for the karlstad sofa, it's dry clean only. In reality with the dog, and being prone to spill everything I ever get into my hands, it wasn't realistic. I still have the slipcover, but It's been traded out for a washable one.

We added more seating! I bought a kind of broken karlstad loveseat for 60 bucks, and with 20 dollars spent in IKEA as is section, and a new slipcover, I have a cheap matching sofa!

I scored two floor display RIBBA frames for five bucks, normally 20$. I added some photos of the city I had taken with my Dianna.  I can't wait to add more to my own personal gallery.

Here's a run down of everything in the room.
Rug- Hand me down from the parents (free!)

It's still only a start. But It keeps getting better! I want to get some more art and color up on the walls!

Progress!

Things are starting to shape into a real house! We’ve gotten so much done this week. We’ve only done a soft move so far, just furniture, nothing else really besides the basics. We’ve still got the rest of the month to move, so as always were taking it slow. Here’s some photos from around our place as it is right now.
The living room before

Here's what it looks like right now
Totally digging the new commodes and slipcover on the sofa. I know the legs don’t match. One of the custom legs I had made popped out and broke the frame, so I fixed it and decided to play it safe. I might paint them soon.

Since we shelled out some bucks for a fancy slipcover we’ve instated a no puppies on the sofa rule, which I’m not sure if Bowie gets or not. He looks all sad and dumb when we tell him down, and direct him to his own personal bed. Believe it or not that was the least fugly one I could find at petsmart. I also just noticed that packing tape on the ground, sorry.
Another before shot
And here's the same wall now
The one of many first thing I’ve painted black thus far. It’s the movie wall! As soon as I can slap a second coat on and have it dry, we're wall mounting out TV. I don’t know what were going to do as far as our consoles are concerned. The apple TV, playstation 3, record player, and stereo need some where to go, but that TOBO tv unit isn’t really flowing with everything I’ve got in mind for the house. It’ll work for now, seeing as I’ve already blown to much money on new furniture, but I’ll be on the lookout for something awesome to buy or DIY.
We’ve also got rid of the holly trees from hell! Check out the before!
Here’s the progress picture!
It makes the house look so much larger! I’ve also started repainting all the tounge color off of the porch with a green called “Bay Leaf” a martha stewart color. I’m thinking about getting rid of the screen door, but it’s pretty practical. I wonder if I can spray paint it? Also we removed the carpet and plywood from the porch, we found planks! Planks that I plan to sand and refinish.
Yes, that is trash on my porch, but at least you can’t see it from the street. Things will get better after we get settled in, moving is such a hassle/bore.
Here’s half the tree still not broken up. I’m not very motivated to do it seeing as it’s been non stop raining all week. That and the City of Cincinnati basically decided on the day we cut those trees down that they weren’t going to pick up yard waste anymore. I wonder if there’s a bonfire in the midst?
