Fall Palette Challenge

Please Check out my Pinterest for sources.

It's that time of year where I start my seasonal sewing plan. Unlike in spring, where I completed say only three projects, I'd like to get a lot more sewing done this winter. Seeing as it's already like 40 degrees outside I have a feeling this winter is going to be a bad one. Nothing gets me more sewing productive than being stuck in the house.

I haven't purchased any fabric for this yet, and it doesn't really match anything in my stash, which means I'll need to buy as I go. I'm not super stoked about that, but my stash right now is kind of all over the place. Nothing coherent is coming from that mess. I have some patterns in mind though I'd like to take a crack at, all of which I already own.

Simplcitiy 1427 from 1955, I have a really well maintained copy in my size. I've never sewn from a true vintage pattern before, and it makes me a bit nervous. I expect there to be tons of fitting issues, but I could use some fitting practice. The full skirt and bow are staying well within my theme.

Victory Patterns Nicola. This is such a beautiful dress. Really timeless. It seems pretty easy to put together as well, which is a plus.

Simplicity 1776. I love the clean lines of view A with the three quarter length sleeves. I've never used a PR pattern before, I'm interested in what makes them unique.

Ah the trusty, and free, sorbetto pattern. I plan on drafting some sleeves and a peter-pan collar to mimic the striped shirt in my mood board.

I have a ton more patterns in mind as well. I'm in the process of organizing and documenting my pattern stash. It'll be easier to figure out what I want to sew once I know what I have. I also want to dip my toe into actual pattern drafting this winter. I need to make myself a good sloper. If that's something anyone is interested in, I could blog the process.

Do you have any sewing plans this winter?

Office Wardrobe Capsule

Office Wardrobe Capsule

I love clothing. I always have. It's lead to some unfortunate mass hoarding of my wardrobe though. I've been very consumed recently with the idea of purging a good majority of it. I'd like to get a plan going for my though, and fill it with classic pieces which can be remixed year after year.  I need to get down to the staples and basics of my wardrobe.
I recently bought the jersey pencil skirt pictured above, which fits me really really well, and is super comfortable. I had to stop myself from buying more than one. After all, I'm sure I can sew a simple jersey skirt based off of this one, and sew up three for the price I payed. But that's a whole other post.
The skirt is so simple, you can pair it with anything, dressing up or down. For this capsule I tried to keep everything very ladylike and classic. Bows, hearts, pearls, are a big feature. Keeping basics in black and white, I'm able to go for pops of color in the blouses, to keep the wardrobe fun, yet professional.
I'll be taking boxes of clothing to consignment this weekend and see what I can get for things I don't wear anyways.

Do you have a well built wardrobe? Any tips?
Also how did you weekends go?

The Perfect Picnic

The Perfect Picnic

It's getting close to my favorite time of year to be outside, the end of summer. Temperatures become much more tolerable than when august started. The humidity also starts dropping, as well as the mosquitoes.  Perfect picnic weather. Even if you're just having a little backyard get together, it's worth getting outside!

This weekend I made some serious progress on my painted white wood floors. The room feels really fresh and bright! Not quite done yet though.

What's your perfect picnic? How was your weekend?

Bedroom Dreaming

Bedroom Dreaming

Sometimes it's nice to plan out things that aren't going to happen anytime soon. By sometimes, I mean all the time. I've been wanting for a soothing bedroom for quite awhile, but it always gets pushed to the back of the to-do list. Not to mention the fact that I'm pretty broke thanks to house taxes. Oh well, I can dream for free right?

1950's Swimsuits & Giveaway!

I love 1940/1950's bathing suits. They're really classic, flattering, and all around awesome. They're very unlike the suits today though. Most were made of Cotton fabric, with little stretch. The closure of choice was usually a metal zipper. I really can't imagine doing any serious swimming in them. But I can very much so imagine sunning myself on the beach in such a pretty little number. Finding one ready made is practically impossible. Well, practically impossible if you find spending hundreds on a swim suit outrageous.
Just as anything in my life that I can't afford, I can at least attempt to DIY! Luckily I won't even need to bother trying to draft a pattern! Mrs. Depew has a wonderful PDF "Beach Bra" pattern available in many sizes!

Even luckier she's offering the pattern for free to one of my readers!

Mood Board Monday : Deck Dreaming

Deck Dreaming

I have a pretty awesome, not very stylish deck. In fact it still has the deck furniture that was left by the previous owners. You can check out the furniture and the deck in an older post here. I'm starting to plan a mini deck makeover. Keeping the furniture white, simple, and comfortable. I plan on using that fabric to make some pillows, maybe an outdoor rug with my DIY dropcloth Tutorial. Also I'm going to need some lighting seeing as whats there is pretty minimal. Solar powered string lights from IKEA in fun colors sound awesome!

But, this is going to be on the back burner for awhile,a little planning never hurt right? I still need to finish the bathroom, which has changed by leaps and bounds since you saw it last (More on that Wednesday). Ideally also I'd like to put new decking on the deck. I'm going to sell the current furniture on craigslist and get at least a few pieces this summer, I'll keep you posted though!

Do you have any plans for your outdoor living space?

Mood Board Mondays : Hazel Plans

Hazel Plans

Spoiler alert guys, I finished sewing simplicity 1800 last weekend (Scheduled to post on Thursday)! In time to wear to a BBQ even! While I bask in the fleeting glow of a completed project, let's start planning my next one! I'm going to be sewing the Victory Patterns Hazel. I have this great buffalo check in pink for the top, but and at a loss at what to do for the bottom half. I think I have it narrowed down to navy, gray, or sea glass.

Any input?

Mood Board Mondays : Space Case

space case

After seeing Promethus and reading about Mars One (Which I'm hoping isn't some elaborate hoax), I've been pretty stoked on space. To be honest, I'm always stoked on space. Even though I was dissapointed that NASA was seemingly being outsourced these past few years, I'm hearing more and more about private companies developments into space exploration. It's so relieving to see space exploration isn't dead. Did anyone else manage to catch the Transit of Venus? Cincinnati, as always was overcast. :(

Shopping Within Your Pallette : 100$ ShopBop Giveaway

This giveaway is closed, the winner will be posted this week!

I'm in the midst of a sewing frenzy working on the my spring pallet challenge. I got to thinking last night about how I didn't really have anything in my wardrobe or accessory wise that would really mesh with my plans. Does anyone else want to shop within their palette this year? Here's some stuff I pulled from our Friends over at shopbop! I'm really digging orange and navy this season.

I for one know sewing a whole mini wardrobe isn't cheap! So when Shopbop offered to host a little giveaway here I thought that would be a good way for a lucky someone to supplement their very own DIY wardrobe. Or if you read this blog and don't sew, just a to have a "treat yo self" moment!

The Bathroom Plan

We have one weird wonky bathroom in our little house. While I'm in no way against a 1 bathroom home, I have a personal vendetta against ours. The previous owner, as my Realtor would say," bon von jovi'd " it. It's was redone in the 1980's, and redone poorly at that. It's got this horrible honey colored laminate. When they installed the toilet they put it on a painted marble slab. The sink is huge and wide, and you have to shimmy to get around it. There are weird bars and shelves everywhere. The tub stops short of the wall, so they built a pony wall, THAT CUTS OF THE WINDOW. Hadn't they ever heard of a curved shower curtain? I'm sure before it had a beautiful claw foot tub, which makes this a million times worse. Oh yeah, and they never even finished the walls out behind the pony wall. I just... I can't. Also, one of the last rooms that still rocks a shade of flesh tone paint, ew.

So Let's get our plan together shall we?
Click to Enlarge, Go to the Pinterest Board for sources!

For those of you wondering about my time frame, like anything to do with my house, this is going to forever I'm sure. It's not easy when you have only a little expendable income at at time. Plus the idea of putting in a new sink seems so over my head. Maybe I can get my dad to help me when he comes up from Florida this fall? I can at very least paint though! I'm cheating a bit when it comes to the paint selection, it's a can I already own. Seeing as the Boyfriend has the entire weekend off, we might actually get something done!

In the meantime I will have sweet dreams on sledgehammering that pony wall.

Spring Summer 2012 Mood Board

1//2//3//4//5//6//7//8//9

So the first piece of inspiration was the fabric my mother sent me. It's the polka dot one with the flowers. So I pulled my main colors from that and decided I wanted to ground them with denim once I saw kendi's very well put together combo with the bell bottoms. I haven't picked out my patterns yet, but will let you guys know when I do!

Lady Cave

So I've decided to turn DOOMbasement into Lady Cave. As many of you know, I am the queen of hobbies. I recently purchased everything I need for my own darkroom. I'm also a sewer, so to save Brian from the tangeled mess of thread that is, also going in the lady cave. I've been ~trying~ to work out, so maybe one day I'll have a nice piece of exersize equiptment to get jiggy with. A Mini bar and place to sit wouldn't hurt either.Photos of my scary scary basment to come!

So I've decided on black! If I don't like them I can always repaint! New downlight, floors and a DIY chevron curtain. I'm really considering going with the VCT classic black, not only is it true Midmod, but it's hella cheap!
